Gentle support for potency and endurance

Potency problems in men are more common than is widely known. In case of enduring problems with sexual intercourse, e.g. stress-related, the strain on the partnership increases. There are different types of erectile dysfunction, most of which require treatment. Please contact a doctor, pharmacist or sex therapist if you notice problems with your potency. Of course, these people are subject to a duty of confidentiality, so you can be sure that your conversation will be treated discreetly and confidentially. Self-help groups are also a good place to start. Communicating with other affected people breaks down inhibitions and prejudices, and this is the first step towards a fulfilling intercourse.

The correct condom

You can already do something to prevent premature ejaculation by choosing the right condom. These condoms often have designations such as "Long Love", "Longtime Lover", "Delay", "Retard", "Länger Lieben" or "Potenzkondom" in their names. The best-known act-lengthening condoms are the condoms that have a benzocaine or lidocaine-containing coating on the inside of the condom (on the glans). Benzocaine, or lidocaine, is a local anesthetic (meaning it has a numbing effect).

Condoms with a cooling coating (e.g. with menthol) also have a delaying effect that is a bit more gentle than benzocaine. Women also find cool condoms exciting and pleasant. However, they should not be used for anal intercourse.

For men with sensitive skin, the above condoms are not recommended as they can cause skin irritation.

However, there are alternatives: If you tend to climax prematurely, you should avoid ultra-thin or particularly sensitive condoms. Slightly thicker condoms are ideal. If you don't like them because you want to feel your partner more, you can use a specially shaped condom. Contoured condoms are very tight under the glans. Due to the pressure under the glans, they promote erection and delay orgasm.

Condoms with an integrated cock ring have a similar effect. The ring on the shaft of the penis causes a slight congestion of blood, which in turn causes a strong and long-lasting erection.

And as a latex allergy sufferer? Use your usual non-latex condoms, along with a topical lubricant or spray - or a cock ring.

More information about Premature Ejaculation (Ejaculatio Praecox)

Please note that we only offer general information here. Please contact your doctor for a comprehensive examination and diagnosis!

Premature ejaculation is one of the most common sexual dysfunctions in men (25-40%).

Premature ejaculation is usually defined by a deviation from the average IELT (intravaginal ejaculatory latency time), i.e. the time from insertion of the penis into the vagina to ejaculation is measured. According to a Dutch study, this average is 5.4 minutes - a little less for older men and a little more for younger men (for the full study, go to www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/16422843). To be classified as a disease, the IELT must regularly be less than 2 minutes. But the definition is difficult, since not only the actual duration until the climax, but also the (subjective) suffering of both partners must be taken into account. The controllability of the ejaculation also plays a role. In practice, these two factors are also included for definition and diagnosis.

A distinction is also made between lifelong (primary) or acquired (secondary) ejaculatio precox. The latter often occurs in connection with physical illnesses (hyperthyroidism, prostatitis, etc.) or other potency problems. Sometimes the causes can also be found in the psychological area. However, the physical causes should always be clarified by a doctor!

The lifelong ejaculatio praecox can not only be caused by psychological problems, as is often assumed. Malfunctions in neurobiological processes are also possible causes.

It should also be noted that premature ejaculation can be quite natural - for example during the first sexual experience or after a long period of abstinence.

Help and treatment

If there are physical causes, it is of course the most important thing to treat them first! Ask your doctor or therapist for advice on this.

Premature ejaculation is usually treated with behavioral therapy. In addition to couples therapy, there are also various exercises designed to help men delay orgasm. Drug therapy with orally administrable drugs is the last resort. Unfortunately, there is no medication that is specifically approved for the treatment of ejaculatio praecox. In practice, however, certain drugs are recommended that have an increase in IELT as a "desirable side effect". Please ask your doctor for advice! Anesthetic agents such as lidocaine, which can be found in creams that you can buy in any pharmacy, are used locally. You will also receive comprehensive and personal advice there.

Delaying, mostly benzocaine-free lubricating gels or sprays with a delay effect are somewhat gentler. Extracts of oak bark, gingko or other substances support your erection for enduring lovemaking. These special products are also condom safe - for latex condoms and non-latex condoms.

Tips for the partner

Problems with sexuality, whether it is impotence or other sexual dysfunctions, are always a problem for both partners. If the causes of the problems lie in the psychological area, it is helpful to undergo sex therapy together with the affected partner. Good couples therapy takes the pressure off you as a couple of having to function sexually and shows solution strategies for dealing with partnership, also with sexual problems.

There are now many good books on the subject available to help you understand and support your partner. As with all difficulties in living together as a couple, it is important to try to communicate successfully, especially with such intimate topics. Don't put additional pressure on your partner - men suffer from sexual dysfunction very badly anyway. On the other hand, approaching and treating the problem together supports the success of a therapy.
