Without lube: dry condoms

There are many different types of condoms. In addition to moistened condoms, there are also powdered, dry condoms. In this text you will find information on the subject of "dry condoms".

Why are there condoms with lubricant at all?

Standard condoms are lubricated, mostly with a lubricating film based on dimethicone (silicone oil). Thanks to the lubricant, the condom remains elastic, does not stick and is easy to unroll. In addition, the use of an extra lubricant (at least for vaginal intercourse) is not absolutely necessary. Depending on personal taste, there are slightly moistened condoms, but also extra moist ones - and of course lots of special lubricants (see "Coatings").

Then why are there dry condoms?

Not everyone likes lubricated condoms. Some even find them uncomfortably greasy or slippery. For some positions, a coating is also rather unsuitable (see below). That's why there are also dry condoms. Dry condoms do not have a lubricating film but are dusted with a fine powder. The powder is necessary so that the rolled-up condom does not stick - because then you could no longer unroll it. The powder is usually a powder made from corn starch.

Of course, there are also users of wet condoms who may not tolerate the lubricant. Anyone who suspects that they do not tolerate the lubricant on the standard condoms should have an allergy test carried out by a doctor in order to be able to use a lubricant without this allergen if necessary. If you have unclear symptoms (such as burning, itching, rash, etc.), please consult a doctor.

What do you need dry condoms for?

Dry condoms are commonly used during oral sex (fellatio). The lubricant in standard condoms is tasteless, but not everyone is comfortable with it due to its consistency. A dry condom, on the other hand, feels silky soft and naturally dry. To prevent sexually transmitted diseases, it is also important to use a condom during oral sex, especially if you have different partners (see "Protection during oral sex").

Some men feel more grip with a dry condom. You don't feel like the condom is slipping. Since discomfort can occur during both vaginal and anal intercourse with a dry condom, it is advisable to use a lubricant in this case.

Which lube goes with a dry condom?

Even if you want to decide for yourself on the type and amount of lubricant, you are welcome to use a dry condom - in conjunction with the lubricant of your choice. This should definitely be suitable for condoms (i.e. free of fat and oil, see manufacturer information!). Otherwise, any silicone or water-based lubricant is suitable, even with aroma or other extras. For oral sex there is "edible" lube - even flavored. There is a special lubricating gel for anal sex, some of which even has a relaxing effect on the anus. And then there are various sprays. This is a simple way to make your love life very varied.

How are dry condoms made?

Dry condoms are first made like regular condoms. The glass bulbs are dipped into the liquid latex. Then the condom is vulcanized (i.e. heated) and washed afterwards to get a silky surface. Then it is gently removed from the glass bulbs (with water and soft brushes). Now the condom is dried with hot air. The powder is applied (and the lubricant in the case of standard condoms) only after the following test procedures before the condom is packed in the sealing foil. Constant checks and various tests guarantee you the best possible safety (here in Europe there are legal regulations, DIN standards and test certificates for this).
